Today, downtowns are paying for their suburban mistakes between the 1950s – 80s. San Diego’s Horton Plaza, Seaport Village, and B Street Central Business Districts are obsolete and proving to be difficult to revitalize, retrofit, and rebuild. “Designing for Everyone” includes those in the future! Designing buildings for one lifecycle, one generation, one market moment is unsustainable in downtown contexts. This session is co-sponsored by the Burnham Center for Community Advancement and will share innovative and time-tested tools to revitalize and re-imagine how downtowns should be built for several generations and market cycles into the future.

Howard Blackson is a native San Diego Urban Designer, educated in London, trained in Singapore and South Korea, and currently working across North America. He is a member of the Balboa Park Committee and president of Citizens Coordinate for Century 3.
