What It Is
Step into the deep sea.
Meditations on the Deep Sea: Part I is a 30-minute immersive audio-visual experience built from minimally edited, high-resolution deep-sea footage paired with an original musical score and presented in 5.1 surround sound.
There is no narration and no agenda, just scale, sound, and light. The experience invites you to slow down, observe, and form your own connection with one of Earth’s least-seen environments.
Created by composer and optical oceanographer Daniel Koestner, the piece explores how image, sound, and space can work together to transport an audience somewhere they could not otherwise go. The footage was captured during a 2023 research expedition in the Norwegian Sea in collaboration with the University of Bergen and OceanX.
This screening is Part I of a growing series bringing scientists, artists, and designers together to create immersive experiences inspired by the deep ocean.
