Design Exhibition Park(ing) Day

Design Exhibition Park(ing) Day

Park(ing) Day is a global, public, participatory project where people worldwide temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces and convert them into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer, greener, and more equitable streets for people. This year, as part of Word Design Experience powered by San Diego Design Week, we invite design teams to participate in this innovative project and reimagine urban parking spaces as vibrant public parks.

To assist with planning & decision making for Park(ing) Day activations, the City of San Diego has developed guidelines for organizations and businesses who would like to participate.

City of San Diego guidelines for Park(ing) Day are as follows.

Participants:

  • Will not be required to get a permit from the City of San Diego
  • May not install activities/items in red, blue, yellow, white and green curb spaces
  • Are required to feed the meter(s) for the time they use spaces
  • Are encouraged to communicate Park(ing) Day plans with neighboring business owners and managers. Reduced parking availability may not be a happy surprise for some business owners
  • Are not permitted to block/reserve parking spaces earlier than 12am on Friday, Sept 20th and must remove all materials from parking spaces no later than 11:59pm on Sept 20th
  • Are required to follow Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and safety measures to ensure there are no trip hazards, or obstructions on adjacent sidewalks
  • Are required to ensure their Park(ing) Day activities in (and around) their installation do not create a stormwater/drainage issue (no fluid draining from the installation)
  • Are permitted to have interactive activities, but are not permitted to have live performance(s) or audio that disrupts neighboring businesses or traffic visibility/safety

City of San Diego:

  • Parking Enforcement will not ticket Park(ing) Day activities (unless activities are determined to be out of compliance with the guidelines stated above)
  • Parking Enforcement will not request participants to remove installations from parking spaces (unless activities are determined to be out of compliance with the guidelines stated above)
