Talk or Interview Temporary Paradise @50 and Beyond

It was September 15, 1974. On a backdrop of out-of-control suburban sprawl, rampant environmental destruction of our canyons and river valleys, and depressing urban decay, co-authors Donald Appleyard and Kevin Lynch presented “Temporary Paradise?” to the city of San Diego. Both warned in their transformative vision plan for the San Diego Tijuana region that unless leaders took steps to guide growth and conserve resources, it would be a “temporary paradise.” Sadly, both authors died within a few years of its publication, with Appleyard being killed by a speeding drunken driver in 1982.

Over its 50-plus years, “Temporary Paradise?” has served as a timeless and transcendent vision plan for the San Diego Tijuana transnational region, arguing that the border become a “zone of confluence” sharing its environment, its economy, and its cultures. For 50 years, it has served as a road map to communicate our best ideas through poetic voice and engaging imagery that can effectively move the region toward a future of sustainability, livability, and equity.
