Workshop/Demo The invisible -ism: Disrupting ageism in design
Did you know that by 2030, 1 in 5 people in the U.S. will be 65 or older? And in 2034, the number of adults 65+ will be greater than the number of children under 18 for the first time in U.S. history. Yet, older adults are one of the most overlooked groups in the design industry. Why? Because our outdated views contribute to our ageist beliefs, which can be found in every part of our society.
If you are interested in creating a future of belonging for the largest growing age group, this workshop is for you. You will learn that designing for older adults is more than universal design and age-friendly product features. It includes awareness around how you present and promote your design, through content, images, and the specific language you use. Come learn how to speak to and connect with your target audience in a more inclusive and respectful way.
In this workshop I will illustrate common misconceptions about the 65+ population, introduce you to the concept of ageism awareness (how it reveals itself through different segments of society), and provide you with examples of words, phrases, and images that reflect this population in a positive way. You will also have an opportunity to review and revise your own materials.

Dr. Lisa Rill received her PhD in Sociology with specialization in aging/health. She has 24 years of experience in the aging industry as a researcher, educator, geriatric social worker, and non-profit leader. Dr. Rill is a partner, researcher, and content designer at Rill Insights — a research and design agency that helps build age-friendly products and services. She is also the Executive Director at Senior Life Source, a non-profit organization that provides education on aging for all ages.
