PAINTING TIJUANA; A MURAL DOCUMENTATION AND MAPPING PROJECT IN TIJUANA, MEXICO
Painting Tijuana is a project to photograph murals and other urban artistic interventions in Tijuana, Mexico, and make them available to the public through a bilingual website and interactive map that locate, and display photographs and information about each mural.
Mural art is ephemeral art. Because of urban development, vandalism and exposure to the elements these works of art can disappear quickly. Painting Tijuana preserves them by creating an archive of mural photographs, which in turn preserves part of the city’s identity and fosters appreciation of the diverse expressions found in the city.
Painting Tijuana shows that artistic expression is not limited to traditional venues or artists. By making visible these unseen works of art one can more fully appreciate this work and the artists who created them.
Project director David Maung will show a selection of images from the more than 65 murals he has documented to date. He will talk about his work in Tijuana and how the project has influenced his evolution as a photographer. Gustavo Mayoral, project webmaster, will give a tour of the website. The presentation will conclude with a panel of Tijuana muralists who will share their experiences with community-oriented arts interventions.
