Talk or Interview Age-Friendly Communities: Enhancing the economic, civic, and social vitality of San Diego
Did you know that by 2030, 1 in 5 people in the U.S. will be 65 or older? Currently, older adults outnumber children in 11 States, and the numbers will continue to grow. A large part of this population desires to age in place, yet our communities were not built to support the needs of people of all ages and abilities. Age-Friendly Communities create environments that allow older adults to participate in their community and stay connected. But it’s not just valuable for older people, it can also enhance the economic, civic, and social vitality of the entire community.
If you are interested in participating in a movement that not only benefits the largest growing age group, but people of all ages within your community, then this talk is for you. No matter what type of designer you are, there is a place for you, from architectural and interior designers to UX/UI, graphic, and product designers, and even fashion and game designers! Come learn how you can help make sure the San Diego Age-Friendly Community thrives. In this presentation I will introduce the concept and benefits of Age-Friendly Communities, discuss how to maximize impact and foster sustainability, and explain how San Diego is working towards becoming more age-friendly.

Lisa Rill, PhD /Rill Insights & Design
Lisa received her Ph.D. in Sociology, specializing in Aging/Health. She has 25 years of experience in the aging industry, serving as a geriatric social worker and Research Faculty for the Claude Pepper Center on Aging at Florida State University, addressing quality of life in long-term care. Dr. Rill is currently the Executive Director at Senior Life Source, a non-profit organization that provides education on aging for all ages. She is also a partner, researcher, and content designer at Rill Insights & Design — a research and design agency that helps build age-friendly products and services.
