Talk, Panel or Interview Common•unity | Creating Common Spaces into Community Places

Envision and experience inclusive community-driven human-centered design of open-air common spaces as community places in San Diego through implementation of the City of San Diego Planning Department’s Spaces as Places comprehensive program to allow permanent outdoor gathering spaces within areas of the public right of way, such as dining, walking, biking, public art, education, entertainment, and other activities.

A history and practice of this program will be presented by a panel of professionals at the official World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 EXCHANGE Pavilion located in the heart of historic Balboa Park on the Plaza de Panama.  Convene socially over caffè (coffee in Italian) before the formal program.  Post-conversation, partake as community in pedestrian tours downtown on-site at example projects, from the Gaslamp Promenade in the historic Gaslamp Quarter to the Little Italy neighborhood and the streetary scene on India St., Piazza della Famiglia, Piazza Basilone and more, as well as hosted light culinary delights from sweet dolci (dessert in Italian) to savory.

Please gratefully join us to learn more about, and experience in practice, the transformation of outdoor physical spaces amidst natural and built elements that create real (versus virtual reality) places for functional use by the community and an enjoyable feeling of community sharing common ground (literally and figuratively).  Belonging in the built environment.
