Networking Event Living-Centered Design Workshop: Healthy Shelters for the Homeless
How can we design healthy solutions for the most vulnerable in our community?
Through CannonDesign’s Living-Centered Design ethos, borrowing on decades of design expertise in the healthcare space, and in partnership with the UC San Diego Design Lab—a global pioneer in human-centered and humanity-centered design–we invite the public to collaborate with the enthusiastic and talented design minds of the San Diego community to identify, ideate and prototype flexible and attractive solutions to benefit the health and wellness of individuals experiencing homelessness.
During this hands-on, interactive workshop, we will explore a range of innovative design solutions, such as modular housing, pop-up health centers, physical spaces for low-income seniors or other resources that help people stabilize their lives, take care of basic personal needs, and provide easy access to support services for mental and physical well-being. These projects could serve as cost-efficient design opportunities and used as triage centers to benefit the unhoused community, extending the medical profession’s reach to where the most vulnerable live.
Participants will collaborate to develop a visionary approach utilizing Human-Centered and Living-Centered design principles to create safe, adaptable spaces and resources that prioritize community and well-being for the unhoused. Interactive play and design discussions will help illustrate solutions from concept to impact, emphasizing inclusivity and belonging. Individuals with first-hand encounters with housing and health challenges will also be invited to share their lived experience and participate in the workshop activities.
CannonDesign is partnering with Design for San Diego (D4SD), an initiative of the UC San Diego Design Lab. D4SD is a citywide civic challenge open to all residents to create novel solutions that address the most complex issues facing our region. The 2024 Challenge focuses on the housing crisis and participants are invited to submit solutions focused on health, awareness, upward mobility, and placemaking. The submission deadline is October 25, 2024, and selected submissions will be presented at the World Design Capital 2024’s World Design Policy Conference on November 11-12, 2024.
While this workshop is an in-person-only event, the outcomes will be summarized and available on the D4SD website. Those unable to attend the workshop will still be able to participate in the broader D4SD 2024 Challenge.
