Talk or Interview Place-Based Design Techniques: Illustrating, Printing & Dyeing Our Way Back to Belonging

Where am I? Who am I?? What is my purpose?!!! Where and how do I belong???!

These are all questions artist and designer Sarah Minarik of Petrichor Pigments has asked, pondered and mostly answered, at least some of the time. With a love of maps, a handful of mushrooms and baskets of locally + sustainably foraged materials, Sarah will demonstrate her practice of mapping the land where we live and using natural print-making and dyeing to create one of a kind textiles that tell a story of belonging to the land we inhabit and our place within it.

To make this event financially accessible to everyone, the talk and demonstration will be free. If you want to make a limited-edition, Design Week scarf you can pay $15 (cash/Venmo) at the event, while supplies last.

About the Host

Sarah Minarik & Hans Perez

Sarah Minarik is a foggy Bay Area native, currently living in and constantly seeking shade in sunny San Diego. She spent her younger years exploring wild places as an avid orienteerer throughout North America, Great Britain and Sweden. Her love of textiles came from her mother who loved to sew. Her love of mycology came from her years attending the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has worked in public education, community building, sustainable supply-chains, marketing and business development. Most recently she graduated with a dual degree in Graphic & Interaction Design from San Diego City College. She brings all of this life experience together in her printing & dyeing practice where she sees herself as an interpreter for the land, helping to tell its stories to whomever will listen.
