Design Exhibition Salvaged Weaving + Wicker “Kintsugi” Workshop

Revision is built on the belief that everyone and everything has purpose. Our shared studio is a place where the creative community can grow with each other in peer-to-peer learning practices centered around concepts of resourcefulness, reciprocity, and reduction of waste.

As advocates for the disabled population of artists, we celebrate diversity through projects that promote equality. We strongly believe experiential art making creates an organically welcoming invitation for people of all abilities to collaborate, as opposed to a more academic approach that may sometimes exclude contribution by those not enrolled in traditional institutions, and/or that may limit or eliminate participation through unreachable systemic prerequisites. Within the format of sustainable art, what was once thought of waste, can emerge as something new. This concept is indigenous to the Mexican culture that borders us, who in many ways practice resourcefulness out of necessity and invention, for example by their practice of staining fibers with plants and insect based dyes.

In this event we will offer the broader community an opportunity to tour the workspace while Artists in Residence are working, enjoy a revival-themed Exhibition in our gallery, and participate in a scrap weaving demo using our practice of “wicker Kintsugi”.

Structures reclaimed from the salvage yard, such as wicker chairs, damaged baskets, bicycle wheels, etc. are provided in lieu of traditional weaving looms. Recycled “yarn” made from shredded bedsheets, discarded fabric, painted vinyl, and clothing is supplied. Guests of all skill levels will be given an opportunity to weave on various structures as part of a collaborative art making experience that highlights the beauty in belonging.
