We aim for our designs to outlive us. But what if the mark of a truly great product isn’t how long it lasts, but how gracefully it disappears?
Join UC Davis design alumni Akari Nakashima and Inbar Schwartz to discover the intersection of biology and industrial design. During this workshop, they will contrast traditional subtractive manufacturing methods with additive processes and showcase successful applications of eco-materials like bio-plastics, fish leather, and mycelium. This workshop invites participants to get hands-on with product samples. You will leave inspired, equipped with a new perspective on sustainability, and carrying home your own bio-material sample.

Akari Nakashima and Inbar Schwartz
Akari Nakashima and Inbar Schwartz are UC Davis alumni specializing in industrial, spatial, and graphic design. They focus on how biodesign can reshape our relationship with manufactured goods. Their design philosophy centers on circularity—creating products designed to safely decay or reintegrate into their environments. Through their San Diego Design Week workshop, they invite makers to explore alternative, biology-based materials and learn how to map out truly circular product lifecycles.
